Osteopathy for newborns, infants and young children

A whole sphere of osteopathy regards the intervention with newborns, infants and young children. At Inspiration, we are specialized in pediatric osteopathy and we see newborns in consultation from their first weeks of life an even from their first days of life. Since osteopathy is a very soft approach, it is very suitable for the newborn’s immature system. The osteopath will adapt his in intervention according to the baby’s needs and they respond very well.

The infants, even at an age where movement is an integral part of their life, can be treated in osteopathy. By adapting the positions and by working through game, it becomes easy and pleasant to pursue consultations.

A little later, the children can also benefit from an osteopathy intervention. At the age of learning and walking, falls, even if small, can cause functional disorders: disrupted sleep, ENT disorders, excitement, anger, digestive problems, etc. Osteopathy is an approach that helps correct the possible residual signs related to these microtraumas.

In school, the child who cannot stay in place or lacks concentration, the one having difficulty holding his pencil or showing challenge with certain motor activities could also benefit from an osteopathy consultation.

For adolescents, postural problems are often sign of an incorrect adaptation of the body to gravity and all the changes related to growth and puberty. Some adapted correction techniques can improve these vertebral disorders.

Reasons to consult

The most common reasons to consult for newborns, infants and adolescents are the following :

  • As a preventative measure to grow healthy
  • To balance the body after a difficult birth
  • Congenital torticollis and plagiocephaly (flat head)
  • Otitis or repetetive infections;
  • Reflux or regurgitation problems
  • Colics, irritability and unexplained crying
  • Delay at the neuro-motor development level
  • Difficult breat feeding
  • Postural problems
  • Feet, knee and hip postural disorders
  • After a fall, an accident, a fracture
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Etc.

The osteopathy interventions are very soft and mainly consist of mobilizations, stretching and pressing with the goal of improving posture, mobility and vitality of the organism’s different structures. The interventions aim at the pelvis, the spine, the cervical region, the cranial region and the viscera.

At the clinic, we direct our approach towards osteopathy for the whole family. In fact, Pascale-Julie Robinson, D.O., is specialized in treatment of the newborn and the young child. She works almost exclusively with this clientele since the last 10 years and she was able to surround herself with a team of osteopaths committed to the well-being of children.

«As the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined». The Oxford dictionary of phrase and fable, cited by Dre Viola Frymann, a renowned American pediatric osteopath. This proverb from the beginning of the 18th century means that the early influences have a permanent effect, hence the importance of the early intervention in osteopathy.

The sooner the better. At Inspiration, our youngest clients are 2 to 3 days old. Often the mother who consulted during pregnancy is aware of the preventative benefits of the osteopathy intervention. If the pregnancy and delivery progress went very well and that breast feeding is going well, the best moment to consult an osteopath specialized in pediatrics is between 0 and 2 months. On the other hand, if the pregnancy and delivery were more difficult, if a problem with breast feeding is present, or if the doctor mentions that the baby has a torticollis or a cranial deformation, it is preferable to consult rapidly.

All osteopathy techniques are very soft and adapted for the newborn and the infant. Our approach respects the bone growth which is in formation in this clientele. No abrupt maneuver is used, and manipulations with cracking are absent of all osteopathy interventions. The osteopath specialized in pediatrics can adapt his approach, his palpation and the treatment position according to the baby’s needs. Sometimes certain areas of the body can create discomfort when treated, for example, a child who had an otitis may not like being touched close to the ear. At all moment, it is thus possible to adapt to better interact with the reality of the child in front of us.

For the first consultation, we plan an hour to have sufficient time to complete the health assessment regarding the pregnancy, the delivery and the global condition of the baby. The intervention could be shorter but, advice, positioning and exercises could complete the intervention. For the following consultations, it is possible to adjust the period of time depending on the child’s reactions. On the other hand, most of them, even the younger ones, are very comfortable, respond well to the interventions, and don’t want to leave or only after choosing a surprise in our pirate treasure chest!
